Bone and soft tissue tumors are uncommon in orthopaedic practices, and therefore patients need specialized care by specialists who are well trained for both bone and soft tissue tumors. We have approximately 350 surgical cases each year which include limb salvage surgery for malignant bone and soft tissue tumors and CT guided resection of benign bone tumors such as osteoid osteoma. We are currently performing multiple translational researches such as the utilization of gene expression for diagnosis and identifying new molecular targets and biologics for the treatment of sarcomas.

Surgical reconstruction following resection of osteosarcoma
We perform chemotherapy before and after surgical resection and reconstruction of osteosarcoma. In majority of the cases, we perform limb savage surgery for malignant bone and soft tumors instead of amputation. Special tumor prosthesis or biological reconstruction using pasteurized autogenous bone graft are commonly used for many cases.

We use liquid nitrogen to induce cell death of tumor cells and reimplant the bone graft following wide resection. (A case with adamantinoma is presented as a representative case)
Cryotherapy for malignant bone and soft tissue tumor
Since 2011, we have performed cryotherapy for advanced stage (metastatic stage) malignant bone and soft tissue tumors. This technique can be used for the tumor within 5 cm, and hospital stay will be 2-3 days.
CT guided resection of osteoid osteoma
Since 1995, we have performed CT guided resection of osteoid osteoma. This minimum invasive procedure provide early recovery of the patients and decreased postoperative pain due to the small incision.
Pre-surgical marking using MRI to reduce incision for high invasive soft tissue sarcoma
Soft tissue sarcoma is known to be very progressive and has high recurrence rate. We use pre-surgical marking using MRI for these sarcomas, and it enables us to reduce surgical margin.
Proteomics analysis to develop biomarkers related to high invasive activity on myxofibrosarcoma
With collaboration with National Cancer Center Institute in Japan, we investigate a novel approach to analyze distribution of tumor protein in malignant soft tissue tumor, such as myxofibrosarcoma.
