Upper extremity division of Orthopaedic Surgery Keio University consist of two services, Shoulder surgery, and Hand and Elbow surgery, that are grouped by 4 experienced instructors and 3 residents. Our division has more than 100 special physicians working in related Hospitals and Universities, which makes us one of the largest upper extremity group in Japan.
We have regular out-coming patient clinic every week, and specialty clinics for shoulder (Tuesday afternoon), and hand and elbow patients (Thursday afternoon). The patients are coming from all places in Japan, including the patients from other special hospitals and Universities.
Our basic research includes bone, cartilage and peripheral nerve biology, tendon and rotator cuff morphology, development of novel prosthesis for the elbow, and biomechanics of upper extremity.
We present 5 to10 papers at each related scientific meetings such as Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand, Japan Shoulder Society, American Society Surgery of the Hand, and European Society of Shoulder Surgery. Many of our members are council members of those societies that are related to Shoulder, Hand and Elbow surgery.

Total Elbow Arthroplasty (K-NOW)
We have developed a novel prosthesis for the elbow (K-NOW) based on anatomic morphology of Japanese population. K-NOW has unique concept which enables us to reduce bone resection, increase type of the implants, and increase modularity at revision. We use 3D surgical planning based on CT images, and ensure minimum invasive surgery and appropriate placement of the prosthesis.
Costal Osteochondral Graft
It has been an unsolved problem to treat articular cartilage damage biologically. We perform Costal Osteochondral Graft to the patients who suffered from severe cartilage injury at the finger joint and elbow, and achieved successful clinical results with those cases.
Surgical treatment for Peripheral Nerve disorders
Clinical results of peripheral nerve disorders depend on affected time period and surgical procedures to treat them. We have published many papers about mechanism and treatment of the peripheral nerve disorders, such as spontaneous paralysis of the anterior interosseous nerve and posterior interosseous nerve. We work as an official of multiple center study for the interosseous nerve palsies.
Surgery for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Since there have been significant progress in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by biologic drugs, goal of surgical treatment is now functional recovery by arthroplasties and corrective surgeries. Those procedures include tendon transfer and early postoperative rehabilitation for the rupture of the finger extensors, arthroplasty for the distal radio-ulnar joint disorder, and those achieved satisfactory clinical results and are followed by many of our related institutions.
Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty)
We perform total shoulder arthroplasty for the patients with end stage osteoarthritis and severe rotator cuff injury. We have been analyzing the morphological feature of the shoulder in Japanese normal population and developing nominal arthroplasty for the patients.
